Zuken has been supporting “Forze,” the Hydrogen Racing Team at Delft University, in race cars since 2011. Errors in collaboration are something that I’m focusing on quite a bit at the moment. Today I’m looking at the creation of topologies and error-prone collaboration between circuit designers and PCB designers when sharing constraints during the design process.
Do you know what’s going on inside of your BGA devices, but do not have sufficient functionality in your ECAD software to address advance timing skews?
Recently, I was working on a project with an electronic design group and we decided to start the 3D modeling of the complete assembly to start some joint analysis with the mechanical engineering team. So we fired up Board Modeler and started to insert STEP models for the components and connectors on the board. As usual, I searched to see what models were already available in the existing mechanical library and we found most of the connectors, but luck was not on our side when we searched for the BGA or DIP packages (or for any board-level components) that matched the parts used on the board.
Current design practice involves spreading decoupling capacitors over the boards to prevent power distribution issues during the engineering of printed circuit boards. But this may cause an over-defensive design, unnecessary costs, and sometimes problems that are only detected in the first prototype. Much tighter requirements due to regulations, quality, and time-to-market, mean that these time-consuming tasks need to be shifted into the design flow.
